Are People Holding To Their New Year's Fitness Resolutions?

The New Year is an exciting time for many, as it gives people a moment to reflect on the past year, and look toward the next. The tradition of setting resolutions in the new year is practiced by many, and it’s not uncommon to hear someone with the goal of getting back to the gym. In fact, several gyms will run promotions at the beginning of the year, to help encourage potential customers that their establishment is the best place to achieve that goal.

But, are people still holding to that resolution?

Looking at Advan’s Fitness and Recreational Sports Centers NAICS index, we noticed a continued year over year increase for the month of January showing a 1.95% increase in traffic compared to the same month a year ago. That being said, in January of 2023, the YoY increase was at 10.5%.

While it’s clear that fitness is still a common new year’s resolution, it looks like the addition of new gym-goers have started to slow down this year. This could’ve been caused by multiple consumer behaviors , and we’re curious to see how this trend will continue in 2025.
